Chalkys review: is this UK music and DVD shop worth using?

Buying music and films online can be oddly fiddly. One minute you are hunting for a new vinyl release, the next you are checking whether a DVD region will actually play, whether a pre-order will arrive near release day, and whether the item will turn up factory sealed. Chalkys sits in that useful, slightly specialist corner of online retail: lots of music, lots of film and TV, and a catalogue that feels built for browsers as much as searchers.

This is not a hands-on test: we have not ordered from Chalkys for this review. It is a desk-based shopper review using Chalkys’ public website information. Piglington’s short version: Chalkys looks worth a closer look for UK buyers of vinyl, CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays, especially if free UK delivery appeals, but collectors should read product pages carefully before assuming sealed packaging, dispatch timing or disc-region compatibility.

What Chalkys sells

Chalkys sells music, film and TV products, including vinyl, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and merch. The site has dedicated areas for music new releases, vinyl new releases, CD best sellers, vinyl under £20, film and TV best sellers, DVD new releases, Blu-ray new releases and pre-orders.

The product range is broad rather than boutique-minimal. At the time of review, Chalkys’ DVD collection alone shows thousands of products, while the homepage highlights vinyl, CDs, DVDs, merch and pre-order shopping. That makes it feel more like a catalogue retailer for physical media than a small curated record-shop experience.

What looks good

The physical-media focus is clear. Chalkys is useful if you still like owning albums, films and box sets rather than relying entirely on streaming. It gives vinyl, CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays proper space rather than treating them as an afterthought.

UK delivery looks straightforward. Chalkys states that UK orders get free delivery, with UK orders sent using Royal Mail 48 tracked. Its FAQ says UK customers should expect an order in roughly three to five working days after dispatch, while product-page delivery wording says standard UK delivery times are usually two to three business days once sent. In practice, shoppers should treat dispatch time and delivery time as two separate bits of the wait.

Pre-orders are easy to browse. The site has dedicated pre-order sections, which is handy if you are trying to secure a new release in advance. As with any pre-order, the sensible move is to check the release date, format and any edition-specific details before paying.

The region warnings are useful. Chalkys’ FAQ says its DVDs and Blu-rays are Region 2/B, and customers outside Europe may need a compatible or multi-region player. That is exactly the sort of boring detail that prevents a disappointing parcel day.

What to check before ordering

Do not assume every new item is sealed. Chalkys says its items are brand new and unused, but that not all UK items come factory sealed. Collectors who care about shrink-wrap should check before buying, rather than discovering their standards are stricter than the retailer’s.

Check dispatch wording on the product page. Some items may dispatch quickly, while others have longer dispatch windows or pre-order timing. Chalkys says items marked “Dispatched Same Day” need to be bought before 2pm GMT on a working day to go out that day; other items may take longer.

Returns have condition limits. Chalkys’ delivery and returns wording says returns are available within 28 days of dispatch, but opened items or items with shrink wrap removed are not eligible for return or refund. That is particularly important for music and film, where opening the packaging can change your options.

International buyers should be extra careful. Chalkys promotes free worldwide delivery on orders over £15, but tracking and delivery expectations vary by country. If you are outside the UK, check shipping, tracking and disc compatibility before treating the basket total as the only decision.

Who Chalkys may suit

Chalkys looks best for UK shoppers who still buy physical media: vinyl collectors, CD buyers, film fans, gift shoppers and anyone who prefers browsing a large catalogue to relying on a marketplace search box. It is also worth checking if you are comparing prices on new releases or looking for a music or film gift that feels more thoughtful than a voucher.

It may be less ideal if you need a very hand-held specialist record-shop experience, if sealed condition is non-negotiable, or if you are outside Europe and mainly buying DVDs or Blu-rays without a multi-region setup.

If you are buying pop-culture gifts rather than albums or discs, our Zavvi UK review may also be useful. For second-hand and refurbished entertainment or tech, our musicMagpie review is a better comparison point.

Verdict: is Chalkys worth a closer look?

Yes, for UK buyers who want a broad online source for vinyl, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays and related merch. The free UK delivery, tracked Royal Mail 48 information and clear region warning make the basics fairly easy to understand.

The main caveats are collector details: packaging may not always be factory sealed, returns depend on condition, and dispatch timing can vary. Read the individual product page, check the format and region, then compare the final price against your usual music or film shops. If those details line up, Chalkys is a perfectly plausible place to put on your physical-media shortlist.
